An hour after they arrived, Pastor Max joined Tyler in the office waiting area while Joyce and Lauren spoke.

“I know you care about her,” Pastor said, “but you can’t stay at her house. It’s not appropriate.”

“She wasn’t okay.” Tears rose in Tyler’s eyes at the thought of how distressed she was. “I needed to stay.”

“She told us you did a little housecleaning.” Max patted him on the back. “That was the first step. Now Lauren knows if she needs someone to stay with her, she should call Shelly or Cheryl. Lauren also signed an agreement that she’ll call my wife or myself if suicidal thoughts come. We’ll call 9-1-1. You need to do the same if you think she’s in danger of hurting herself.”

Tyler lowered his head and nodded. “I kept praying she’d come out of it.”

“We talked a lot and I don’t see her as a threat to herself now,” Pastor Max said. “She recognizes how low she was last night, the events and wrong thinking that led her there. She told us she made a promise to Adam and you to never hurt herself.”

Tyler lifted his eyes.

“That’s good because she’s acknowledging what’s right and her tie to others.” Pastor leaned forward. “Though she’s suffered from depression for years, it’s also one of the stages of grief. Along with anger. It’s okay that she’s wrestling with God right now. We need to continue to pray for her, speak God’s truth to her, and allow Him to touch and heal all the broken parts.” He grinned. “She considers you her closest friend. I’m not saying you need to spend less time with her, just don’t stay the night together. Even if you sleep with your shoes on.”

Tyler chuckled. He didn’t think she noticed. “I understand.”

“She’ll never be the same,” Pastor Max said, “but with the Lord’s help, she’ll be stronger in her faith and a great witness to those around her.”

Tyler nodded. “Thank you, Pastor.”

“Thank you for calling. I’m glad you’re home.” He patted Tyler on the back. “Discipleship Thursdays?”

“I’d like that.” Tyler stood as the door to Max’s office opened and Lauren walked out.

“How’d it go?” Tyler walked beside her on the way to his car.

“Okay.” Lauren slipped on her sunglasses and kept her face toward the pavement. “Joyce is going to meet with me on Wednesdays. We’ll go through a book on controlling your thoughts.”

“That should be good. She seems nice.”

“She is.”

Tyler opened the passenger door.

Pausing, she looked into his face. “Thank you. I needed this.”

Christian music playing in the background, he silently prayed for her as he drove. Like the long drive up the coast after Adam passed, she stared out the window. God, bring her back to You. Help her see Your goodness in all this. Let her feel Your love again. Bring her mind peace.

As they merged onto the freeway, Lauren increased the volume of the radio. Closing her eyes, she quietly sang along with the worship song. When the chorus began, she placed one hand on her stomach and slightly lifted the other toward heaven.
